What are the Best Natural Ingredients in Cosmetics?
The best ingredients in cosmetics are not easy to find. There is a huge amount of ingredients in cosmetics. Finished industrial products may contain up to dozens of different ingredients. What if we take a look and consider what are the best ingredients? The raw materials that are really good for the skin and are well-tolerated ingredients.
How do I choose the right ingredients?
In this story, I do not deal with cosmetic adjuvants at all, such as emulsifiers or preservatives. We are now only dealing with the ingredients for skin beauty and care, the so-called active ingredients. The best ingredients in cosmetics are usually most common.
The best ingredients
- High in skin care ingredients
- Not irritating to the skin
- Well absorbed by the skin
- Contains no synthetic chemicals
- Preferably organic
- Easy to purchase and not too expensive and exotic
What is the best oil in cosmetics?
I have introduced through many oils already in this blog. The idea is to go through the biggest part of the best-known cosmetic oils. By doing this, you can easily find the essential facts about skin oils.
But what is the best oil?
The best skin oil is well absorbed, multi-purpose use and easy to obtain.
- The best skin oil does not block pores
- The best skin oil does not contain skin irritating ingredient(s).
- The best skin oil is cold pressed, organic and as fresh as possible
There are many oils that fulfill am. conditions.
My favorite oils out of carrier or base oils are as follows:
- rice bran oil; well absorbed by skin, mild, odorless oil, rich in antioxidants, suitable for most, suitable for aging skin
- Sunflower oil; well absorbed by the skin, a mild oil to which only a few are sensitized, easy to obtain, often with a very good fatty acid profile.
- Grape seed oil; mild, colorless, odorless oil, very good fatty acid profile, relatively easy to obtain
- Safflower oil; mild, completely odorless, fatty acid profile suits best to the skin, well tolerated
These four oils are very similar in type. Each production quantity is different so there may be differences in the oils.
Special oils are rich in antioxidants and other herbal chemicals important to the skin. They are often quite expensive and difficult to obtain. Special oils are often added to the products only in drops to give more boost. However, I listed them separately on this list.
Special oils in skin care I can mention the following
- Opuntia oil; very absorbent, protects skin, rich in anti-inflammatory ingredients and antioxidants, softens skin
- Rosehip seed oil; very good fatty acid profile, does not block pores, helps fight acne, rich of antioxidants
- Pumpkin seed oil; very full of antioxidants, suitable for many uses, does not block pores, fatty acid profile is the best
- Hemp seed oil; fatty acid profile close to the skin, contains especially high antioxidants, does not block pores, contains skin moisturizing and protective ingredients.
I have found these oils best for skin care. Along with these oils I use several other oils to supplement the products.
Where can you find the best vegetable butter for your skin?
There are not so many good vegetable butters suitable for skin although the variety of them is large. There are many exotic solid fats that are used in skin care. However, I will not list them here as they are usually too hard to obtain and/or too expensive. The best ingredients in cosmetics must be easy to find.
The best solid fat or vegetable butter for the skin is definitely unrefined shea butter. Shea has superior skin care properties. Shea can be recommended for babies, provided nothing is added.
Shea butter is perfect in skin care and suits all of us. It is suitable for many different purposes. Shea butter protects our skin from wind and breeze. Its properties have been tested in the dry winds of Africa and under the burning sun for thousands of years.
The best antioxidants for the skin are here
Where Can I find the best antioxidants? Of course, there is an enormous number of antioxidants in oils. Many oils, such as pumpkin seed oil, are especially recommended for skin care precisely because of their antioxidants. Cold-pressed oils always contain vitamin E, one of the best antioxidants. Vitamin E is the only preservative in water-free creams. It tells you something about the effectiveness of vitamin E.
Of course, the source of antioxidants can be found elsewhere.
The best antioxidants for skin care are
- Green tea contains a huge number of antioxidants. It soothes the skin and fights wrinkles. Green tea reduces pores (rich in tannins), brightens the skin and clears the scalp. Green tea also exfoliates the skin gently.
- Retinol is a precursor of vitamin A. It stimulates collagen and fights against wrinkles. Retinol helps the skin to regenerate and increases blood flow to the skin. For example, the carrot contains retinol. Retinol is an antioxidant especially for aging skin.
- Vitamin C is a very important skin vitamin. Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant to prevent oxidation. Vitamin C is usually mentioned when talking about increasing resistance to the flu. However, vitamin C also works on the skin. Vitamin C is a skin brightener. It increases collagen production and thus prevents wrinkles. Vitamin C prevents aging processes on the skin.
Many fresh berries and fruits contain vitamin C. I personally add vitamin C powder to my own products like serums. It is the simplest and most preserved state of vitamin C. Vitamin C powder also acts as a mild preservative in the product.
Other essential substances for the skin
Oils and antioxidants are both clear, important groups of ingredients for skin care. However, there are a few other substances I can definitely recommend.
Other important ingredients
- Oats contain many herbal chemicals that have been found to be very beneficial to the skin. My blog article about oats is very popular.
- Clays are the oldest beauty care products in the history of mankind. The idea behind them is that they pull the metabolic waste out of the skin. Clays are even able to pull heavy metals out from the skin, originally from polluted air. The gentlest clay is kaolin.
- Seaweed is rich in minerals. Seaweed mask is a very good skin care method every now and then. Seaweed is also anti-inflammatory and soothes the skin.
- Peat is somehow forgotten in Finland. However, it is one of the best skin detox products. Health care peat is not the same thing as peat used for flower beds. Health care peat is taken from the lower and thus the oldest layers of the peat swamp. Health care peat is a smooth, liquid porridge where the plant material is no longer visible. The peat mask brightens the skin.
- Probiotics are naturally occurring organisms on the skin. They are bacteria and other germs that protect our skin from other, harmful bacteria. Probiotics are naturally present in healthy skin.
